Editing day 3

We began at 10am.

We continued editing until we had a critique with David at 11:30. To elaborate on my notes, David wanted to see more footage of audience, hopefully showing the diversity of Bradford. He saw a lot of preparation of Grotto, but very little of the outcome – the audience, their responses, the student work etc. He wanted to see more students work, for example images from the Dark Wit section. Then he gave us his opinion on specific bits of the sequence such as cutting to a footage of students smiling at the camera on the word “experience” of Marianne’s speech. “Viewers start believing what she says when you match it to the correct visuals”. He also suggested that we could have a second song/soundtrack to help the video transition from the preparation (cleaning, working, making, painting) to the outcome.

After the critique, we came to the point where we were struggling to decide which bit of Marianne’s speech to start the video with. We finally came to asking ourselves two questions : Is the video about Grotto the event, or is the video about Viscom making the event Grotto? After another brief meeting with David at the office, we began re-listening all the tracks for the strongest or most captivating statement by Marianne to use as a hook at the beginning of the video. In the end we decided with “People weren’t expecting what they found when they walked into the space, I think it was a nice surprise for everyone”

We continued editing and had a second crit on the same day with David at 16:00. Again, a explanation of my notes : We him a clip of a quote by Marianne from the newspaper article, “It really questions the meaning of Christmas”,which was a text animated slightly over a black background. He liked the idea of a quote but he didn’t like that it was a quote by Marianne. Then he suggested that we use quotes from the audience, which did not have to be their exact words, as long as we do not attribute it to an individual. For example, it could be something an audience told us on the day, or it could be something that we overheard from a conversation, so on. To “represent an observed reality in a form of a quote” as a narrative technique. We continued discussing on the topic and showed him some of the audience responses Marianne mentioned in the recordings. “Interesting how a real quote can sound fake, and a manufactured ones sound better”. Potential quotes to include are : “Very thought provoking” , “Really powerful work, made me quote emotional”, “I loved it, I’m coming back with my friends”

He also suggested that we could place the quotes over a blurred footage, to make it look “more cinematic and less clinical”. Perhaps footage of audience speaking to one another if possible. He also reminded us to credit ReBooted, Marianne as project coordinator and all the students at the end of the video. Things to include were:

Beginning of video : Grotto Logo – “A Unique Browsing Experience in Bradford”

End of video : Viscom Logo – “Grotto was a production by BA(Hons) Visual Communication” (2016) – Leeds College of Art – Student Team – Project Coordinator – with thanks to East Street Arts & Rebooted for providing the venue for Grotto

Before he left he came back in one last time to suggest that maybe we could include a brief version of Marianne’s speech on what the students have gain at the end of the video. He told us about the likely audience for this video, who were the people visiting the college website, people who could potentially work with Viscom in the future, potential applicants or current students to see what Viscom has done and what they could expect from the course, and why his suggestion would make sense.
